Symptoms
  • Eye Strain: Discomfort or fatigue in the eyes.
  • Dry Eyes: A sensation of dryness or irritation in the eyes.
  • Blurred Vision: Temporary blurriness, especially after prolonged screen use.
  • Headaches: Pain or discomfort, often around the forehead or temples.
  • Neck and Shoulder Pain: Discomfort in the neck or shoulders due to poor posture.
  • Difficulty Focusing: Trouble maintaining focus on screens or switching focus between screen and printed material.
  • Sensitivity to Light: Discomfort or pain in bright light or glare from screens.
  • Red or Irritated Eyes: Eyes may appear red or feel irritated.
Complications
  • Chronic Eye Discomfort: Persistent discomfort or pain can affect daily activities and overall quality of life.
  • Reduced Productivity: Difficulty concentrating and discomfort can decrease work efficiency and productivity.
  • Exacerbation of Existing Conditions: Can worsen underlying conditions such as dry eye syndrome or refractive errors.
  • Postural Problems: Prolonged poor posture can lead to chronic neck, back, and shoulder pain
Causes

Prolonged Screen Use:

  • Extended Hours: Spending long periods staring at screens without breaks.

Improper Ergonomics:

  • Screen Position: Incorrect distance or angle of screens.
  • Poor Posture: Uncomfortable or poorly designed seating and workstations.

Poor Lighting:

  • Glare: Excessive brightness or glare from screens or lighting.
  • Insufficient Lighting: Working in poorly lit environments.

Inadequate Blink Rate:

  • Reduced Blinking: Less frequent blinking while using screens can lead to dry eyes.

Uncorrected Vision Problems:

  • Refractive Errors: Conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.
Prevention

Follow the 20-20-20 Rule:

  • Breaks: Every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and look at something 20 feet away.

Optimize Screen Settings:

  • Brightness and Contrast: Adjust screen settings to comfortable levels.
  • Text Size: Increase text size for easier reading.

Improve Ergonomics:

  • Screen Position: Position screens about an arm's length away and slightly below eye level.
  • Comfortable Seating: Use ergonomically designed chairs and desks.

Proper Lighting:

  • Ambient Lighting: Use sufficient and evenly distributed lighting to reduce glare.
  • Anti-Glare Filters: Use screen filters or coatings to minimize glare.

Regular Eye Exams:

  • Check Prescription: Ensure that eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions are up-to-date.
  • Eye Health: Regular check-ups can help detect and address any visual or health issues.

Blink More Often:

  • Hydration: Blink frequently to keep eyes moist and reduce dryness.
Risk Factors
  • Extended Digital Device Use: Prolonged use of computers, smartphones, and tablets.
  • Existing Vision Problems: Uncorrected refractive errors or other visual impairments.
  • Poor Ergonomics: Ineffective screen and workstation setup.
  • Inadequate Lighting Conditions: Poor lighting or excessive glare.
  • Dry Eye Syndrome: Reduced tear production or poor quality of tears.

How is it treated?

Rest and Breaks:

  • Frequent Breaks: Follow the 20-20-20 rule to reduce eye strain.

Adjust Screen Settings:

  • Brightness and Contrast: Modify settings to reduce glare and strain.
  • Text Size: Increase text size for easier reading.

Artificial Tears:

  • Lubricating Drops: Use over-the-counter artificial tears to relieve dryness and irritation.

Corrective Lenses:

  • Update Prescription: Ensure glasses or contact lenses are properly prescribed and up-to-date.
  • Computer Glasses: Specialized lenses designed for screen use can help reduce strain.

Ergonomic Adjustments:

  • Workstation Setup: Adjust the position of screens, chairs, and desks to improve posture and reduce strain.

Eye Exercises:

  • Focus Exercises: Practice exercises to improve focus and reduce strain, such as focusing on near and far objects alternately.

Consult an Eye Specialist:

  • Professional Evaluation: If symptoms persist, seek evaluation from an ophthalmologist or optometrist to rule out underlying conditions and receive personalized advice.

How is it Diagnosed?

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS), also called Digital Eye Strain, is diagnosed clinically based on a detailed history and a comprehensive eye examination. It results from prolonged use of digital screens, such as computers, tablets, and smartphones, and is characterized by a group of eye and vision-related problems.

The diagnosis begins with a thorough patient history focusing on screen time duration, viewing habits, work environment, posture, and lighting conditions. Common symptoms include blurred vision, dry eyes, eye fatigue, headache, neck and shoulder pain, and difficulty focusing.

    An eye examination includes:

  • Visual acuity testing to assess clarity of vision.
  • Refraction test to determine the need for corrective lenses.
  • Slit-lamp examination to evaluate the health of the anterior segment and tear film.
  • Accommodation and vergence assessment, especially in younger individuals experiencing focusing issues.
  • Dry eye evaluation including Schirmer's test or tear breakup time.
  • If the symptoms are related to uncorrected refractive error, presbyopia, or improper ergonomics, corrective lenses or workplace modifications can be recommended. Often, blue light-filtering lenses and anti-reflective coatings are also advised.
  • No specific laboratory or imaging tests are needed unless symptoms point to a more serious underlying condition. A diagnosis of exclusion, CVS is confirmed when no other pathology explains the symptoms and the history is consistent with screen overuse.

FAQs

CVS is a condition resulting from prolonged computer use, causing eye discomfort and vision problems.

Common symptoms include eye strain, dryness, blurred vision, headaches, and difficulty focusing.

It is caused by prolonged screen time, poor lighting, glare, and improper viewing distances.

Take regular breaks (20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds), adjust screen brightness, and ensure proper lighting.

Consult an eye care professional if symptoms persist or worsen despite making adjustments.
