FAQs

Radiology is a medical specialty that uses imaging technologies to diagnose and sometimes treat diseases. It includes various techniques like X-rays, CT scans, MRI, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine to visualize the inside of the body.

  • X-rays: Quick, used for examining bones, chest, and detecting fractures.
  • CT (Computed Tomography): Detailed cross-sectional images, often used for complex conditions like trauma, cancer, and internal bleeding.
  • MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging): Detailed images of soft tissues, useful for brain, spinal cord, joint, and soft tissue evaluations.
  • Ultrasound: Uses sound waves to view soft tissues, blood flow, and is commonly used in obstetrics and abdominal imaging.
  • Nuclear Medicine: Uses small amounts of radioactive material to evaluate organ function and detect tumors, infections, or other disorders.

Most imaging tests are safe. X-rays and CT scans involve small amounts of ionizing radiation, which is generally safe but should be minimized. MRIs use magnetic fields and are free from radiation. Ultrasound is also safe, as it uses sound waves instead of radiation.

Preparation depends on the test:

  • X-ray: Typically no preparation is required.
  • CT Scan: Sometimes requires fasting or drinking a contrast dye.
  • MRI: May involve fasting and removing metal objects.
  • Ultrasound: Fasting is sometimes required, especially for abdominal exams.
  • Nuclear Medicine: May involve fasting or specific instructions based on the test type.

  • X-ray: Few minutes.
  • CT Scan: 10-30 minutes.
  • MRI: 30-60 minutes, depending on the area being imaged.
  • Ultrasound: 15-45 minutes.
  • Nuclear Medicine: Time varies but may take a few hours if the radioactive material needs to circulate.

Contrast dye is a substance injected or ingested to enhance visibility in images. It highlights certain areas, improving the detail in CT scans, MRIs, and X-rays. However, some people may experience mild side effects, and patients with kidney issues may need to discuss risks with their doctor.

Pregnant women can have certain imaging tests. Ultrasound and MRI are generally considered safe during pregnancy, but X-rays and CT scans are typically avoided unless absolutely necessary.

Inform your radiologist. Open MRI machines or sedation options can be available to help patients feel comfortable during the scan.

Results are usually available within 1-2 days, but emergency cases may receive them within hours. Radiologists interpret the images and then report to the referring physician, who will discuss the findings with you.

Generally, imaging tests do not have side effects. Some people may feel temporary discomfort from the contrast dye or from lying still. For nuclear medicine scans, the small amount of radiation dissipates over time.
