Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure for the removal of the gallbladder. It is primarily performed to treat gallstones and associated complications. The procedure involves making small incisions in the abdomen through which surgical instruments and a camera (laparoscope) are inserted. This approach typically results in less postoperative pain, quicker recovery, and minimal scarring compared to open surgery.

How is Laparoscopic cholecystectomy done?

Preoperative Assessment:
  • Comprehensive medical history and physical examination.
  • Blood tests, imaging studies (ultrasound, CT scan), and sometimes an MRI to assess gallbladder condition.
Dietary Instructions:
  • Patients may be advised to follow a special diet leading up to the surgery, typically low in fat.
Medications:
  • Avoid blood thinners or any medications as instructed by the surgeon.
Preoperative Instructions:
  • Fasting is usually required for several hours before surgery.
  • Arrangements for post-operative transportation and care.

Anesthesia:
  • General anesthesia is typically used.
Surgical Technique:
  • Incisions: Four small incisions (usually about 0.5-1 cm) are made in the abdomen.
  • Insertion of Instruments: A laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera) is inserted through one incision, allowing visualization of the gallbladder.
  • Gallbladder Removal: Specialized instruments are used to detach the gallbladder from the liver and cystic duct. The gallbladder is then removed through one of the incisions.
  • Closure: The incisions are closed with sutures or surgical tape.

While laparoscopic cholecystectomy is generally safe, potential complications include:
Common Complications:
  • Infection at the incision site.
  • Bleeding.
  • Injury to surrounding organs (such as the bile duct).
  • Postoperative nausea and vomiting.
Rare Complications:
  • Pancreatitis.
  • Conversion to open surgery if complications arise.
  • Bile leaks.
