Dialysis

Overview

29procs_dialysis-overview.webp

Dialysis is a medical treatment that replicates some functions of the kidneys in patients whose kidneys can no longer effectively filter waste products and excess fluids from the blood. There are two main types of dialysis: hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

Specialty

  • Nephrology:The medical specialty focused on kidney care and dialysis.
  • Dialysis Nursing: Specialized nursing roles in managing patients undergoing dialysis treatments.
  • Dietitians: Nutrition specialists who help create meal plans tailored to dialysis patients’ needs.

How is Dialysis done?

For Hemodialysis:
  • Vascular Access: A surgeon creates an access point (fistula, graft, or catheter) in the arm or leg for blood to be drawn out and returned during the procedure.
  • Pre-Treatment Assessment:Patients undergo tests to assess overall health, kidney function, and the best type of dialysis.
  • Dietary Adjustments:Patients may need to modify their diet to manage fluid and electrolyte levels.
  • Medication Review: Review current medications with healthcare providers to manage interactions.
For Peritoneal Dialysis:
  • Catheter Placement: A surgical procedure to place a catheter in the abdomen.
  • Training:Patients receive training on how to perform the dialysis process at home.
  • Dietary Considerations:Adjustments may also be needed for dietary intake.

Hemodialysis:
  • Frequency:Usually performed 3 times a week, with each session lasting about 3-5 hours.
  • Process: Blood is drawn from the body and passed through a dialyzer (artificial kidney) to remove waste, then returned to the body.
Peritoneal Dialysis:
  • Frequency:Can be done daily at home, usually using an automated machine at night (APD) or manually during the day (CAPD).
  • Process: A sterile solution is introduced into the abdominal cavity, where waste products are absorbed. After a dwell time, the solution is drained and replaced.

  • Infections: Risk of infections at the access site or in the peritoneum (peritonitis).
  • Blood Clots:Potential for blood clots in the access point.
  • Electrolyte Imbalance: Can occur if not monitored carefully.
  • Low Blood Pressure: Especially during hemodialysis due to fluid removal.
  • Fatigue and Nausea: Common side effects of dialysis sessions.

Benefits
  • Waste Removal: Effectively removes waste products and excess fluid from the blood.
  • Improved Quality of Life: Can help patients feel better and improve their quality of life.
  • Home Options: Peritoneal dialysis allows for treatment at home, offering more flexibility.
  • Life-Saving Treatment: Essential for individuals with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

Infrastructure Facilities

  • Dialysis Centers:Facilities equipped with machines, trained staff, and emergency support.
  • Home Dialysis Supplies: For patients on peritoneal dialysis, suppliers provide the necessary sterile solutions and equipment.
  • Transportation: Some centers offer transportation services for patients who need assistance getting to and from appointments.

FAQs

Many patients can remain on dialysis for years; however, it depends on individual health, response to treatment, and any other complications.

Yes, many patients lead fulfilling lives, though they may need to adjust their schedules and activities around treatment.

No, dialysis is a treatment for managing kidney failure but not a cure. Kidney transplantation may be a long-term solution for some patients.

Patients often need to follow specific dietary guidelines to manage potassium, phosphorus, and fluid intake.

Symptoms of kidney failure, such as fatigue, swelling, high blood pressure, and difficulty breathing, indicate the need for dialysis.
